This article explains how to create, edit, or delete a person’s compensation record.

To add a person’s compensation record:

Note: By default, only Company Admins can manage compensation data. A Company Admin can also allow HR Admins*, HR Managers*, and Limited Admins to manage compensation data for positions they can view and edit. To learn more, refer to: Understanding User Roles & Permissions.

  1. Navigate to a person's profile by entering their name or title in the Jump to a Profile field and clicking their name in the list that populates.

  2. On the person's profile page, click the Compensation tab, then click the Add button to open the Create Compensation Record window.

Note: To adjust the currency for the person’s compensation, click the currency dropdown next to the Add button to select the appropriate option.

  3. Enter the effective date for the compensation record.

Note: If a person has multiple compensation records, only the record with the most recent effective date will be considered active, impacting data displayed on your reports, tables, org chart, and exported files.

  4. Click the Base Pay dropdown to select Salary or Hourly before assigning a dollar amount. If the individual is paid hourly, enter a value in the hrs/wk field.

  5. If the person will also receive variable pay, click the dropdown to select Amount (annual) or Percent of Base before entering a value.

Note: Customers of our Position Management module can create a variable pay type in their company's account.

  6. Click Save.

To edit or delete a person’s compensation record:

  1. From a person’s profile, click the Compensation tab.

  2. Click the dropdown next to the existing compensation record, then click Edit or Delete.

Edit: Adjust the effective date to confirm when your changes will take place before adding or editing the base pay and/or variable pay values. Click Save.

Delete: To remove the compensation record from Built, click the Delete button to confirm this action.

Note: A person’s compensation can also be updated by editing your official org chart datasheet.

Viewing Employee Compensation Data

Compensation Report

To view a summary of active compensation records, navigate to the Reports page from the main menu and click the Compensation tab. If the tab is not displayed, click the More dropdown. You can customize, print, or export your Compensation Report using the buttons in the upper right corner.

Org Chart

You can display people's compensation data on your org chart’s position cards by enabling the appropriate data options. You can also view an individual’s compensation on their info panel by hovering over their position card and clicking the info panel icon.

Notes about managing compensation data:

  • Customers of our Position Management module can compare position budgets to people's compensation when viewing their Position Cost Report or Key Metrics box. Compensation totals that include multiple currencies are calculated using exchange rates from a third-party service. Exchange rates are updated in Built every two weeks.

  • By default, compensation will be recorded in the company’s reporting currency. You can adjust your company’s reporting currency and/or display expanded currency symbols in Built by editing your currency settings. To do this, click your company name at the top of the main navigation, click Company Settings, locate the Currency section, and click the Edit button. Make the appropriate selections before clicking Save.

  • If a person fills multiple roles in your organization, only their primary position will be displayed on the Compensation Report. A person’s base pay rate and variable pay are not affected by how many positions they fill or their positions’ budgeted compensation.

  • To learn how compensation data is recorded for people who share a position, refer to: Understanding Shared Position Data.

  • When exporting people and positions, you can include compensation data by selecting the appropriate field data.

*HR Admins and HR Managers who can manage compensation/budgeting data within a limited scope must receive a Company Admin’s approval before accessing compensation/budgeting data subordinates they’ve added.
