Merging Charts

Prev Next

For customers of our Advanced Org Design, Position Management, Succession Planning, and Headcount Planning modules.

To assist in future-state planning, you can visualize and propose organizational changes by creating and managing a scenario chart. Changes can later be implemented across Built by merging the scenario chart into your official chart. You can merge the scenario chart with another scenario chart during the planning phases.

Scenario charts with a configured approval workflow cannot be merged until fully approved. Learn about requesting chart approval.

Understanding How Chart Merging Works

When merging charts, it’s important to understand how the methods used to create and merge them can impact how the position data is recorded. When merging an edited chart copy back into the original chart (recommended), Built maintains a relationship between the positions on both charts, preserving the position history and ensuring positions are not duplicated during the merge. In all other scenarios, there is no association between positions on the merged charts, often leading to duplicated positions with disconnected data. These scenarios include:

  • Merging one or more charts created from scratch.

  • Merging a chart copy into a chart other than the original source chart.

Removing Duplicate Positions

If your merge results in duplicated positions, we recommend manually editing/removing positions to eliminate duplicates.

Relocating Duplicated Chart Portions

When merging only a portion of a chart into another chart in either of these scenarios, the entire merged portion will be duplicated. If necessary, you can then drag and drop the merged portion to the desired location.

To ensure optimal visualization when moving a portion of the chart, set your Mouse/Trackpad Options (located on the Display Options panel within the visualization tools panel at the top of the chart) to Scroll to move chart.

To merge charts:

Only Company Admins, HR Admins, and HR Managers assigned as a Collaborator on both charts can merge the charts. Learn more about managing user roles and permissions in Built.

  1. From the main menu, navigate to the Org Chart page.

  2. Click the chart dropdown in the upper-left corner of the page to select or create a scenario chart.

  3. When the chart opens, click the Merge Chart button in the upper-right corner.

  4. The Merge Chart window will open, displaying the name of your source chart (the scenario chart you’re viewing). Click the Destination Chart dropdown to select the chart into which you’ll merge the source chart.

  5. Click the checkbox if you’d like to archive the source chart once it’s been merged.
You can access archived charts by clicking the Show Archived Chart link beneath your active chart list.

  6. Click the Merge Chart button. The destination chart will open, and a banner at the top of the chart will indicate the merge is complete. Refresh your page to observe your changes.
