For customers of our Position Management module.

In Built, you can create unlimited variable pay types, helping you more precisely record people's compensation and position budgets.

To create a variable pay type in your company’s account:

Note: By default, only Company Admins can manage variable pay types. HR Admins with compensation and budget permissions for everyone in the organization can also manage variable pay types. To learn more, refer to: Understanding User Roles and Permissions.

  1. From the main menu, navigate to the Position Management page and click the Settings tab.

  2. In the Variable Pay Types section, click the Add button.

  3. Enter the name of the new variable pay type, then click Add to see it displayed.

Note: You can also add variable pay types when managing a position’s budget or managing a person’s compensation.

To edit or delete a variable pay type:

Once created, you can update the name of a variable pay type by clicking the variable pay type dropdown and then clicking Edit. After updating the variable pay type, click Save. To remove a variable pay type, choose Delete from the dropdown menu, then click the Delete button to confirm this action.

Note: You cannot delete a variable pay type while it’s being utilized on a compensation record or position budget.

Variable Pay Data

For each saved variable pay type, Built creates two sets of unique data fields—people compensation fields and position budget fields. For example, if you add a variable pay type called “Bonus,” you’ll find Bonus and Budgeted Bonus in your org chart’s Data Options panel. These fields allow you to display a person’s actual bonus pay and/or the bonus amount budgeted for their position.

Notes about variable pay data:

  • A person’s total annual compensation (the sum of their base pay rate and total variable pay) includes all variable pay amounts.

  • A position’s total budgeted compensation includes the budgeted base pay rate and total budgeted variable pay.
