In this article, you will learn how to designate dotted line relationships in your CSV import file. You can create an unlimited number of dotted relationships for any given employee.

To include dotted line relationships when importing your employee list:

  1. Create an additional column in your standard CSV data import file named "Dotted Line Relationship."

  2. Use this column to list the unique identifier(s) for the manager(s) each person should have a dotted line relationship to.

Note: You must use the same type of identifier used in the Reports To column. (For example, if your Reports To column lists the manager’s Employee ID, your Dotted Line Relationship column will also need to use Employee ID as the unique identifier.)

  3. If an individual has more than one dotted line relationship, use a comma to separate the unique identifiers for each dotted line manager. Depending on the unique identifier, the input in this column may look like ‘27831, 27843’ or ‘manager1@test.com, manager1@test.com’.

  4. When your file is formatted properly, navigate to the People page and click the Import button.

  5. Begin importing your people or positions list by clicking Data from CSV.

Note: During the import, the system will create each dotted line position using the same information as the person’s primary position (same title, etc.). At this time, there is not a way to import different position data (like unique titles) for each dotted line relationship. You can, however, edit the title for each position through the user interface after the import is complete.

When you import an updated file in the future, the system will update the org chart based on the data in the most recent import. For example, if a person had two dotted line relationships on the org chart previously, but the new file only specifies one, Built will remove the dotted line position that is no longer specified on the most recently imported file.
