--- title: "Setting a Position’s Importance Level" slug: "setting-a-position-s-importance-level" status: "update" updated: 2026-08-22T16:46:52Z published: 2026-08-22T16:46:52Z canonical: "support.builtapp.com/setting-a-position-s-importance-level" --- > ## Documentation Index > Fetch the complete documentation index at: https://support.builtapp.com/llms.txt > Use this file to discover all available pages before exploring further. # Setting a Position’s Importance Level *For customers of our Position Management or Succession Planning module.* --- While all positions are important to an organization's success, setting an importance level for each position can help you ensure critical roles are filled. ## **Utilizing the Importance Level Field to Improve Position Planning** Once you set the importance level for your positions, you can visualize this data in your [Positions table](/v1/docs/utilizing-your-position-data), [position management insights](/v1/docs/learn-about-the-position-management-insights-widgets), and [position management reports](/v1/docs/utilizing-your-organization-s-reports#position-management-reports) and [color-code org chart positions](/v1/docs/applying-org-chart-visualization-tools) based on the level of importance. Customers of our Succession Planning module can also [define which positions require a succession plan](/v1/docs/configuring-succession-planning-settings), visualize planning efforts using [succession planning insights](/v1/docs/learn-about-the-succession-planning-insights-widgets). Customers of our Internal Mobility module can [promote internal mobility opportunities](/v1/docs/building-career-ladders). ### **To set a position’s importance level:** *Only Company Admins, HR Admins, and HR Managers can set a position's importance for any position. Limited Admins can adjust a position's importance within their specified scope. Learn more about* [*managing user roles and permissions*](/v1/docs/managing-user-roles-and-permissions)*.* 1. Navigate from the main menu to the **Org Chart** page, then use the chart dropdown in the upper-left corner of the page to select your official chart. 2. [Navigate](/v1/docs/movingnavigating-the-org-chart) or [search](/v1/docs/searching-the-org-chart) the org chart to locate the desired position. 3. Hover over the position card to open the three-dot menu and click **Edit Position**. *Customers of our Position Management module can also edit a position from the Positions table. To do this, navigate to the* ***Position Management*** *page, click the three-dot menu next to the appropriate position ID, and then click* ***Edit Position****.* 4. In the Edit Position window, locate the **Position Info** tab, then click the **Position Importance** dropdown to select a level of importance. 5.
