# Creating Assistant Positions on the Org Chart

Assistant positions on org charts are traditionally represented off to the side of an executive rather than directly below in the same row as other direct reports. This article explains how to create an assistant position versus a standard position.

## To add an assistant position:

1. When [creating or editing a position](/v1/docs/creating-and-managing-positions), click the **Position Type** dropdown within the Add/Edit Position window to select **Assistant***.*

*Selecting Standard will cause the new position to appear directly below the manager's position.*
2. Click **Save**.

## Notes about assistant positions:

- *Assistant positions cannot currently be created via drag-and-drop. You must follow the steps above to create an assistant position.*
- *Multiple assistants can be added to one person. The first assistant will be added on the right side. The second, on the left. And then, each additional assistant will be added in this same sequence.*
- *Assistants are only displayed to the side for the top position when viewing your full org chart, so the chart is still reasonably compact. When viewing an individual* [*chart section*](/v1/docs/creating-chart-sections) *or displaying your chart from a specific position, an assistant position will appear to the side of the top position.*
- *Span of control numbers include assistants.*
- *You can also indicate assistant positions when* [*importing your people or positions list*](/v1/docs/importing-your-people-or-positions-list) *by adding an “Is Assistant” column to your file and entering 1 for any person or position who should have an assistant position type on the org chart. To indicate a Standard position type, enter a 0.*
- *Assistant positions cannot have direct reports.*
