# Connecting New Hires and Job Changes Imported from ADP Workforce Now®

This article explains how to utilize Built position IDs with ADP Workforce Now, assigning new hires and implementing job changes for the appropriate existing positions rather than creating new ones unnecessarily.

## Creating the Necessary Custom Fields in ADP Workforce Now

Once a Built Position ID custom field is created in ADP Workforce Now, you can update individuals’ position IDs, ensuring people are assigned to the correct positions. Optionally, you can create a second custom field to specify effective dates for position assignments. All position assignments will be updated in Built during the next import unless an effective date is specified.

### To create a position ID custom field in ADP Workforce Now:

1. From the **Set Up** menu, locate **Tools** and click **Custom Fields**.
2. Click the **+ ADD** button to create the new custom field.
3. Enter the field name “Built Position ID”. ​*You must enter the custom field name exactly as shown, ensuring there aren’t extra spaces.*
4. Click the **Field Type** dropdown and then click **Text Field**.
5. Click the **Location** dropdown and then click **Employment Custom Field**.
6. Click **Done** to save the custom field.

### To create a Built Position ID Effective Date custom field in ADP Workforce Now:

1. From the **Set Up** menu, locate **Tools** and click **Custom Fields**.
2. Click the **+ ADD** button to create the new custom field.
3. Enter the field name “Built Position ID Effective Date”. ​*You must enter the custom field name exactly as shown, ensuring there aren’t extra spaces.*
4. Click the **Field Type** dropdown and then click **Date**.
5. Click the **Location** dropdown and then click **Employment Custom Field**.
6. Click **Done** to save the custom field.

## To update a person’s position ID in ADP Workforce Now:

1. From the ADP employee profile, click **Start an Employee Change**.
2. Begin completing the **Employee Change** form. Locate the **Position** section of the form.
3. [Copy the position ID from Built](/v1/docs/copying-position-ids), then paste it into the **Built Position ID** custom field.

*If the position should be assigned on a future date rather than during the next import, enter the effective date in the* ***Built Position ID Effective Date*** *custom field.*
4. Complete the form and click **Save**.

## Notes about ADP Workforce Now Data:

- *In ADP, employment custom field data can be defined only once for a person, even if they have multiple work assignments. To move an individual into a new secondary position in Built, you must manually remove them from their previous secondary position and add them to the new secondary position in Built, entering the ADP position ID for their secondary work assignment into the External ID field of the new secondary position.*
